Cockburns of Leith has expanded its team and the range of services it offers corporate clients and retail customers
When John and Robert Cockburn founded Cockburns of Leith in 1796, the brothers were intent on serving the highest echelons of Enlightenment-era Edinburgh.
Fuelled by their vision and ambition, Cockburns was frequented by the great and good of the day, boasting the likes of Charles Dickens, Sir Walter Scott and King George IV among its customers.
The business is under the ownership of two brothers again today – David and Keith Murray – with the latter responsible for Murray Capital’s wine business and intent on restoring Cockburns’ reputation in the capital as a place where people can sample and select from a varied collection of the best wine and spirits. The Murray family has a longstanding passion for wine, with David and Keith’s father, Sir David Murray, having acquired the Chateau Routas vineyard in Provence in 2005.
Cockburns opened a new flagship store on the capital’s Frederick Street last summer, where customers can browse an excellent selection of wines and benefit from friendly, expert advice. The premises are more than just a retail shop however, with in-store tasting events a regular attraction for those planning special celebrations, or for businesses looking for a bespoke hospitality experience for clients.

Cockburns recently appointed its first ever ‘Wine Ambassador’, Malcolm Ogilvie, who has more than 40 years’ experience in the wine industry and a diploma from the globally recognised Wine and Spirits Education Trust.
As well as overseeing corporate and private wine tasting sessions, Malcolm now forms part of Cockburns’ wedding planning team, supplying advice, wine pairings and bespoke tastings to clients as part of the preparations for their big day.
You can even sample the latest vintage from the family’s Chateau Routas vineyard, a 2022 Rose that was recently described as “outstanding” by the globally renowned wine critic, James Suckling.
